I know this seems obvious, but it helps a lot. Also, even though you may *think* you have freed all of your soldiers, things can happen when you aren't in the room, so maybe someone you originally freed has since been refrozen. And there are some rooms which have a magnetic force field (it is rare, but does happen). You either need to find a soldier to deactivate this, or go in the room at the right time.
